Singer, writer, producer and all round good guy William Bell was at Stax from the early days and stayed with the label until 1974. He debuted on the label with 'You Don't Miss Your Water', that subsequently became a classic, spawning countless covers. His understated style contrasted with the more sanctified vocalising of many of his contemporaries and much of this success was with ballads like 'I Forgot To Be Your Love', One notable exception was of course the smash duet with Judy Clay on 'Private Number' that proved he could handle 'sanctified ' soul with the best of them. The CD of out-takes from the early days, 'A Little Something Extra' also showed that he could handle a broad range of material from the beginning. A crucial part of the Stax story.
