A tremendously influential figure during the period in which swing jazz gradually transformed itself into R&B, Buddy Johnson began recording for Decca Records in 1939 and continued right through until 1952 when he and his band made the move to Mercury Records. As with label-mate Louis Jordan, Buddy Johnson scored repeated Pop and R&B chart hits, thrilled dancers at such illustrious dancehalls as Harlem's Savoy Ballroom and laid the groundwork for the musical changes that would rock the 1950s.The band's version of Fine Brown Frame would later be a hit for Nellie Lutcher while Boogie Woogie Mother-In-Law is said to have helped mould Elmore James' celebrated Hawaiian Boogie. That's The Stuff You Gotta Watch was covered by both Wynonie Harris and, notably, Muddy Waters. Among Buddy's own hits are Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball? (Pop # 17/R&B # 13), That's The Stuff You Gotta Watch (Pop # 14/R&B # 2) and When My Man Comes Home (Pop # 23/R&B # 1)(the latter 2 titles both issued under the name of band singer, and Buddy's sister, Ella Johnson). Alongside Ella and Buddy's own vocals is Arthur Prysock, singing They Say I'm The Biggest Fool. If you have any taste at all for jumpin' jive, honking saxes, sassy singers and a strolling beat, Walk 'Em is going to be the year's musical feast.
