For all you film buffs out there, we have an eclectic selection of soundtracks available for your listening pleasure. Amadeus, directed by Miloš Forman, scooped eight Oscars – including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director – and over 30 other gongs worldwide. The soundtrack makes for a rare yet welcome source of Mozartin our catalogue. The same musicians performed the score for Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which amassed an even more impressive 12 Academy Awards. Good Vibrations and Straight To Hell are closer to Ace home territory. Directed by Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, Good Vibrations tells the story of Irish record company founder Terri Hooley, without whom the Undertones might never have recorded ‘Teenage Kicks’, while the soundtrack of Alex Cox’s Straight To Hell isa veritable Sergio Leone-inspired Pogues-fest. It’s a long way from doo wop to blaxploitation, but that’s the journey travelled by Don Julian, who went fromcrooning ‘Heaven And Paradise’ with the Meadowlarks in 1955 to writing and recording music for the films Shorty The Pimp and Savage! in 1973. If hearing these soundtracks imparts listeners with a desire to see Shorty The Pimp, they are destined for disappointment as it was abandoned before completion, though it is said that the only print of the film exists in Quentin Tarantino's private collection. Amadeus, The English Patient, Good Vibrations, Straight To Hell and Savage!, however, are all readily available.
