Formed in Michigan in 1964, the Rationals rapidly became popular performing their R&B-flavoured rock. They linked with Hugh “Jeep” Holland who became the young quartet’s manager and released singles on his A-Square label, four of which were picked up by Cameo-Parkway for national distribution. Their highly original cover of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’ reached #92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 but being a successful singles group did not land them an album. It wasn’t until 1970 that Crewe Records issued their eponymous LP that included covers of ‘Barefootin’’ and ‘Handbags And Gladrags’, the latter also released as a single. The band split up soon after, leaving a rich catalogue of material that Ace has been proud to re-release.
