Memphis vocal group the Ovations benefited from early guidance from Ivory Joe Hunter. They met up with Quinton Claunch who signed them to his new Goldwax label and issued their first single in 1964. They had solid sellers with ‘It’s Wonderful To Be In Love’ and their version of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham’s ‘I’m Living Good’ and were marketed as Sam Cooke soundalikes, even though their capabilities were much wider. They remained with Goldwax until it folded in 1969. Picking up a contract with Sounds Of Memphis/MGM between 1972 and 1974, they had their first album releases and hits with ‘Touching Me’ and ‘Having A Party’, their biggest seller. They were briefly with Chess Records in 1975 and smaller label releases followed until they played their final concert in Japan in 1981. Ace’s comprehensive catalogue of their material charts their best Goldwax and SOM years.
