Dean and Marc Mathis grew up in Georgia, close enough to Louisiana to be exposed to the famed KWKH Hayride radio show. Older brother Dean moved to Shreveport in 1954 and hustled for music work. Joined by Marc, they backed up Dale Hawkins in 1957 before working with some local success as the Brothers. Hooking up with Larry Henley in 1962, the trio signed to Hickory Records but it wasn’t until 1964 that they hit with the Nashville-recorded ‘Bread And Butter’, a falsetto-led dancer, quickly followed by similar but lesser successes. They had another major hit with the Motownish ‘Run Baby Run’ and issued the fabulously full-sounding ‘Crying My Heart Out’. Following more quality material in varying genres into the 70s they transferred to Buddah Records and then the Playboy label for their final single.
