Previously known as the Emeralds, the Mad Lads were signed to Stax Records in late 1964 and released, of all things, a surf-styled record. Reverting to their smooth doo wop-rooted sound, they hit the following year with ‘Don’t Have To Shop Around’ and ‘I Want Someone’, which gained them a strong following, particularly in Philadelphia. Army service and brushes with the law interrupted the group’s progress at key moments. They had their final small hit in 1969 and broke up in 1972 leaving a fine and underrated catalogue of work, the key moments of which are available on Ace.
