Though often grouped with the flower power bands of the late 60s the Fugs in fact evolved out of the earlier literary beat scene. Formed by Ed Sander and Tuli Kupferberg in New York's Lower East Side in 1965, their outrageous anarcho-leftist lyrics hardly endeared them to either the establishment or the peace and love merchants. Their own rants, commentaries and the words of William Blake and others were soon augmented musically by Ken Weaver and the Holy Modal rounders as they recorded first for the eminent Folkways Records before moving to the notorious ESP. Our programme of Fugs releases covers almost 30 years from those heady early days to their alternative Woodstock II recordings in 94 which still show them displaying a remarkable unselfconfident egomania.
