The white femme quartet from Wisconsin got their big break on Arthur Godfey’s Talent Scouts TV show, through which they met Archie Bleyer, who was just starting his Cadence record label. Guided by Bleyer, the group enjoyed a run of 14 hit singles between 1954 and 1961, including the #1 hit ‘Mr Sandman’, ‘Lollipop’, ‘Born To Be With You’ and a cover of the Teen Queens’ ‘Eddie My Love’. Originally singing in a folk style, the group developed their signature close harmony sound. Their success during the 50s had a major influence on girl group sounds until the arrival of the Chantels and the Shirelles. They disbanded in 1961 when they were unable to find a satisfactory replacement for a leaving member. Along the way they had appeared on the first nationally broadcast edition of American Bandstand in 1957.
