Although he was born in Brooklyn in 1931, Jack Elliott had ambitions to be a cowboy and worked with horses as a teenager. Meeting his musical idol Woody Guthrie in 1951, the pair began travelling and performing together. Jack moved to London in 1955 where he linked to Topic Records and released three albums, the first of which was solidly based on Guthrie’s work. He built an enviable reputation as a finger-picker and on his return to the USA in 1961 was signed to Vanguard Records for more albums of his often humorous storytelling songs. He became friends with and an influence on Bob Dylan and later Phil Ochs and later worked with Dylan in the Rolling Thunder Revue. Jack went on to record over 40 albums on various labels and was awarded a Grammy for “South Coast” in 1995.
