Born in Mississippi in 1917, John Lee Hooker enjoyed a long career as a blues singer and songwriter with over 100 albums and many awards to his name. He moved to Detroit in the early 40s and by 1948 had achieved his first major hit with ‘Boogie Chillen’’, having linked to the Modern Records group. Later hits such as ‘Boom Boom’ in 1962 further established him. He toured regularly throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, during which time he relocated to California. Early on he used recording pseudonyms extensively but maintained his own name later when he achieved Grammy recognition for the albums “The Healer” and “Don’t Look Back”, the latter a collaboration with Van Morrison.
