Isaac Hayes was born in Tennessee in 1942. He arrived at Stax Records after playing piano in a variety of bands and set about becoming indispensable to the company. Writing with partner David Porter, while also producing and playing, he delivered a run of memorable soul hits for virtually all the label’s artists. He then set about redefining black music possibilities with a set of albums from 1969 to 1975, starting with the hugely influential “Hot Buttered Soul” and “The Isaac Hayes Movement”. His ‘Theme From Shaft’ mega-hit of 1971 earned Grammy and Academy awards and led him to score more blaxploitation movies. He went on to act and provide the voice of Chef in the animated TV show South Park.
