Louisiana-born Irma Thomas’ first taste of success came when bandleader Tommy Ridgley hired her as a 17-year-old and took her to Ron Records. A move to the Minit label of New Orleans in 1961 enabled her to work with Allen Toussaint and cut signature songs such as ‘Ruler Of My Heart’ and ‘It’s Raining’. In 1964 she recorded ‘Time Is On My Side’, famously covered by the Rolling Stones. The late 60s found her at Chess and thereafter at smaller logos before linking with the Rounder label in 1985. Living and working in New Orleans, where she runs a club, Irma has maintained a long and respected career with an enviable reputation for top quality material and performance at all stages.
