This compilation of Modern sides inicludes the mellowest of hits all featuring the silken voice of Jesse Belvin.
Jesse Belvin's career lasted only ten years from the beginning of the fifties to his tragic death in a car crash in 1960, but during that period he recorded for fifteen record labels and left behind a fantastic legacy of songs and performances. Without a doubt he is best known for the sublime "Goodnight My Love", included here, which was his first release on Modern Records in 1958 and went on to sell a million. For many years disc jockey Alan Freed used the song as his sign-off record. This compilation is the most comprehensive collection ever of his Modern output and includes the singles released as by The Cliques as well as the Belvin solo releases and a whole bunch of previously unissued sides including an out-take of his aforementioned biggest chart hit. Though it was the smooth delivery on material like "Goodnight My Love" that gave Jesse Belvin the name of 'Mr Easy', he could also rock out with the best of them as evinced by "My Satellite", billed topically for the era of the Sputnik and Space Race as Jesse Belvin & The Space Raiders! Ace originally released a compilation of his Specialty, Cash and other early 50s sides (CDCHD 305) and so the best work of this most talented of 50s R&B singers is available at last on CD (and not before time!). Get it just because you've got good taste and file under FINE AND MAINLY MELLOW.
