Like a potted history of their time, the Fatback Band went from the loose street funk of their debut Spring album "Keep On Steppin'" to thunderous disco in a nine year career and 16 albums for the label. Along the way they created Rap. They did all this without a permanent lead singer or indeed a permanent band. Bill Curtis and Gerry Thomas wrote and produced most of the music, bringing in the appropriate musicians as the sound dictated. This was their genius and the thing that kept them fresh sounding and up to the minute with the shifting musical fashions of the day. It still sounds fresh and the Fatback sound is still guaranteed to shake booties on dance floors the world over.
