The GlobeStyle team ventured east last year and ended up in Bosnia, in the north-east of what is still (but only just) called Yugoslavia. Bosnia more than most areas has the right to regard itself as "the crossroads of Europe" and certainly over the years has made its place in history, not the least event being the start of the First World War. However, back in April 1991, there was a relative peace in the region and the intrepid Globe(Style) trotters issued forth to a small recording studio in a place called Ilidza in Bosnia and captured the sound of the hottest band in town - Kalesijski Svuci -and their unique sound, produced from violin, sargija (a stringed instrument of the sax family), the ubiquitous accordion, modern electric guitar and rhythm section. Formed in 1981, they play their own unique mix of traditional songs, taught them by their forefathers, and the contemporary sounds floating across the airwaves from all surrounding sides. The majority population of the region comprises Slav and Muslim communities and this and the unique singing style known as "na glas" (an extremely close harmony form) lend a distinct sound to this "unpronounceable beat of Sarajevo", which in any language still gets s-e-r-i-ously down.
