In the world of Latin soul and jazz, the name of Pucho looms large. For nigh on 37 years, he has purveyed a distinctive brand of dance music, fuelled, as he so rightly notes, by "my musical philosophy - a hard drivin' Latin rhythm with a funk and jazz sound ridin' on top". Born November 1st, 1938, in Harlem, New York, Pucho spent his childhood and early teens exposed to the influences of both African-American music like jazz and R & B and the Hispanic sounds of his neighbourhood. The cross- fertilisation of these two very different musical cultures produced, during the post- war years, a vibrant hybrid in New York that not only spread into modern and mainstream jazz but, from the mid 5Os onwards, also profoundly affected rhythm and blues. Pucho came under its spell, learning to play timbales - paired, cylindrical, single-headed drums. He was strongly influenced by Tito Puente (a great influence on so many artists - Santana even recorded his Oye Como Va) and the music of Joe Panama. Pucho joined Panama's band in 1956 and worked under the leader "until " as Pucho recalls "he fired the whole band and I took them over, turning the group into The Latin Soul Brothers". From 1966 to 1970, he recorded for Prestige Records and this CD draws on those recordings, rightfully considered classics of the genre (among the fine sides are two Herbie Hancock pieces Cantelope Island and Maiden Voyage).
