Guitarist Larry Coryell recorded only one album for Flying Dutchman. Coryell got to know label owner Bob Thiele when he moved to New York in 1965. Thiele was running Impulse Records and Coryell played in Chico Hamilton’s group on their Impulse album “The Dealer”. In 1966, Thiele signed Coryell’s rock group the Free Spirits to ABC. Subsequently, Coryell played with Gary Burton and Herbie Mann and made his own jazz-rock fusion records for Vanguard. His final album for Vanguard established the style that would place him at the forefront of jazz throughout the 70s. In between his Vanguard releases, he recorded the “Barefoot Boy” album for Flying Dutchman. It was an off-the-cuff affair cut at New York’s Electric Ladyland Studio. The opener ‘Gypsy Queen’ features Roy Haynes on drums and two percussionists, with Coryell and saxophonist Steve Marcus soloing over the track. ‘The Great Escape’ is a funky, filmic number that allows Coryell to display his full range of bluesy licks. The album’s finest moment is the side-long ‘Call To The Higher Consciousness’, an extended modal workout with Coryell’s fluid lines perfectly complemented by pianist Mike Mandel. The “Barefoot Boy” album is one of the hidden gems in Coryell’s catalogue and well worth checking out.
